The White Mare by Darren Morris is a recent addition to the list of My Favorite Short Pieces. It’s one of those pieces that’s so good you wish you’d written it yourself.

In summary, it’s a piece about the death of a mother and a traumatized horse that belongs to the narrator’s uncle. It’s very sad, very beautiful, and incredibly vivid. Every word chosen is exact and fruitful. It’s astonishing how short The White Mare is considering how many emotions we’re carried through from beginning to end. The few images we’re given do so much work to convey the enormity of the story’s theme.

I don’t like to ruin first impressions by going too in-depth in the review. I’ll save that for any further discussions we have in the comments. But I’ll leave you with one of my favorite lines so you can get a little taste of how lovely The White Mare is.
